The recent medium of choice has been that of cloth backed sand paper veneered on a wood matrix. The color is achieved by retaining the natural embedded material; wood, aluminum, etc. Most of the works are reliefs, some as large as 8' x 10', as with the one in the collection of Cranbrook Museum of Art.
The sculpture content and composition now reflect the colors and the meditative quality of the high mesa desert. The compositions are still bilateral. Tom's work was thought to be Oriental by the Japanese and Koreans. It was thought to be constructionist by the Russians and Southwestern by Native Americans. |
