Introduction and Background

Tom Morin has been a practicing sculptor for fifty-one years since his first one person exhibition at the Margaret Brown Gallery in Boston. Since then his sculpture has been selected for inclusion in museum shows including the Whitney Annual and has been commissioned by corporations, universities, and private collectors. His earlier sculpture was created in cast bronze, iron and aluminum in foundries he built.

Tom's sculpture content and materials have changed over the years toward more personal concepts and using mixed media. Interest in sculptural composition was greatly influenced by the physical structure of Renaissance painting frames and architectural forms that are universal to all cultures.

The recent medium of choice has been that of cloth backed sand paper veneered on a wood matrix. The color is achieved by retaining the natural embedded material; wood, aluminum, etc. Most of the works are reliefs, some as large as 8' x 10', as with the one in the collection of Cranbrook Museum of Art.

The sculpture content and composition now reflect the colors and the meditative quality of the high mesa desert. The compositions are still bilateral. Tom's work was thought to be Oriental by the Japanese and Koreans. It was thought to be constructionist by the Russians and Southwestern by Native Americans.
